The Clarendon Hill proposal by nonprofits Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH) and Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) and Somerville Housing Authority (SHA) calls for the redevelopment of a property at 34 North Street, Somerville, Mass. This redevelopment will preserve and recreate the affordability of the existing apartments – all 216 families have the right to return to the redeveloped Clarendon Hill – and create a residential community that offers housing targeted towards a mix of income ranges, enhanced amenities, and better connection to the surrounding neighborhood.http://sha-web.org/
Residents explain the importance of this project for families at Clarendon Hill, and the Somerville community as a whole. Share this video: www.vimeo.com/poah/clarendonhill
what
This redevelopment seeks to sustain and strengthen the Clarendon Hill community through the redevelopment of existing public housing units, creation of new mixed-income housing, open space, and community connections.
how
We will complete our
vision by:
- Building safe and affordable quality homes for current and future residents
- Increasing physical connections to nearby amenities and improving the quality of common spaces
- Reflecting the existing housing stock in the surrounding West Somerville neighborhood
who
The development team includes nonprofit developer Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH), community nonprofit Somerville Community Corporation (SCC), and Somerville Housing Authority (SHA). This team will partner with the design Team, which includes ICON Architecture, Copley-Wolff Design Group, and coG-Studio.
why
We are invested in our vision because:
- Clarendon Hill apartments are aging and need to be rebuilt
- Somerville is a fast-growing community and market rents are unattainable for many families
- A cross-subsidy plan will allow the current residents to remain in Somerville and pay the same rent
